Abstract

Purpose – In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of work-family conflict on work engagement in the accommodation enterprises employees. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, a research and analysis were carried out to determine the effect of work-family conflict on work engagement. The independent variable of the research is the work- family conflict, and the dependent variable is work engagement. In the research, the Work-Family Conflict developed by Carlson, Kacmar and Williams (2000) and adapted to Turkish by Aycan and Eskin (2005) was used to measure the work-family conflict situations of the employees and the Work Engagement Scale developed by Kanungo (1982) and adapted to Turkish by Cakir (2001) was used to measure the levels of work engagement. The sample of the study consists of 430 employees, working in accommodation businesses in Samsun. Statistical methods such as frequency analysis, correlation and regression were used in the analysis of the data. Findings – According to the results of the correlation analysis, there is a significant negative relationship between the sub-dimensions of work-family conflict and the level of work engagement. The results of the regression analysis reveal that the time-based and tension-based work-family conflict has a significant effect on work engagement, while the effect of the behavior-based work-family conflict on work engagement is not statistically significant. Discussion – The results of the research show that as level of work-family conflict increase, the level of work engagement decreases. In this context, with the findings obtained, it is seen that the negative situations caused by time and tension based work-family conflict have a negative effect on employees' concentration and work engagement. It can be concluded that if the participants’ time and tension-based work-family conflict decreases, their level of work engagement increases.
