Abstract

The article aims to present the official and unofficial mechanisms of selection, operation, and the composition of the Provincial Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) in Bialystok from 1949 to 1989. The determinants of anomalies in the process of selecting party authorities are indicated. Fluctuations in committee members, their age, education and socio-professional status are presented. Additionally, the role of the executive and control bodies of the Regional Committee of the PZPR in the local power apparatus is described. An attempt was also made to compare various aspects of the Bialystok committee’s operation with analogous structures in other parts of the country.
