Abstract

The author demonstrates how publishers of Polish textbooks for primary schools prepare their source texts. The analysis was conducted on the basis of selected compositions by Adam Mickiewicz (Pani Twardowska, Powrót taty, Przyjaciele), which for many years have been included into school textbooks for the youngest pupils (especially grades 4–6). Special emphasis is put on analysis of those textbooks which were published in recent years, in the context of numerous publications from the 90’s of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. Thanks to this, it is possible to formulate conclusions, draw attention to, among others, increased number of footnotes in Polish textbooks in recent years.The sketch is divided into two parts. In the first part the author looks at the construction of footnotes in school textbooks. He pays attention to the content of the footnotes, wonders if the comments are understandable for students. In addition, the author of the article analyzes the footnotes in terms of quantity and graphics. He also refers the Internet textbook, where footnotes are of a different character than in traditional publications.In the second part of the sketch the author tackles the problem of modernization of spelling and the basis of text in school textbooks. As it turns out, the authors of the textbooks are not consistent in this respect. Pedagogues modernize the spelling to a different degree, while the basis of the print is sometimes uncertain, and the recipients are often not informed about the source of the work.
