Abstract

Objective : To investigate women's knowledge of a group of elderly women on gynecological examination and ascertain the level of understanding of older women about HPV and its consequences. Method : descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach conducted with ten women, aged between 60 and 80 years old in the group dance reborn city Mogeiro, PB. For data collection, we used the technique of semi-structured interview and a form with open questions. The research followed the Resolution 466/2012 of the CNS as appreciation of the Ethics Committee of the Universidade Estadual da Paraiba (UEPB), obtaining approval under Protocol 0660.0.133.000-11. Results : Most of the women interviewed has an empirical understanding of the gynecological examination, considering the important, but do not realize it periodically. Regarding HPV, all the elderly are completely unaware. Conclusion : it is necessary the development of educational activities on the subject with the elderly, in order to clarify the importance of the gynecologic examination to reduce morbimortalidades resulting from neoplasms of the cervix and infestations of sexually transmitted diseases.
