Abstract

Background: Gingivitis in children or pubertal gingivitis occurs due to an increase in endocrine hormones which usually occurs in children under the age of 17 years or during adolescence. Gingivitis is an early stage of periodontal disease in the form of inflammation of the gingiva caused by poor oral hygiene resulting in accumulation of biofilm on plaque along the gingival margin. Adolescent knowledge is very important in underpinning the formation of behaviors that support or do not support dental and oral hygiene. Dental and oral hygiene can be measured using the Gingival Index (GI). The purpose of the study: to determine the relationship between knowledge of oral hygiene and gingivitis in adolescents at the Youth Posyandu, Selaawi Village, Garut Regency. Methodology: the method used is quantitative research with a cross sectional design, the population is 30 teenagers, the sample is taken using the total sampling method. Research measuring tools in the form of a knowledge questionnaire and GI examination format. Analysis of the data using the Spearman correlation test. The results of the study: knowledge of adolescents in the good category of 56.7% and gingivitis in adolescents in the category of moderate inflammation of 36.7%. The results of the Spearman test have a p-value of 0.001 (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a relationship between adolescent oral hygiene knowledge and gingivitis in adolescents at the Youth Posyandu, Selaawi Village, Selaawi District, Garut Regency.
