Abstract

Failure analysis in civil engineering mostly remains a field for experts. Since experts can derive valuable information from any failure case, a key challenge is that of producing new knowledge from a set of cases. Another challenge is to draw similarities between different failure cases, in order to draw general lessons. We develop in this paper an original modelling approach, based on the conceptual graph formalism, aiming at addressing these two issues. The approach is explicited and the developed tool is applied to an existing bridge failure, in order to highlight how it could enable the production of new knowledge.
