Abstract

The coherence theory of knowledge I defend aims at meeting the objections of the skeptic concerning dreams, hallucinations, malicious demons and neural manipulators. Lately it has become popular to argue that the objections of the skeptic are irrelevant to our claims to knowledge and need not be met for us to have knowledge. Popular arguments are often defective, and so it is in this case. The objections of the skeptic, including her most imaginative inspirations, must be met for us to have knowledge. I go further. Knowledge just is acceptance which meets skeptical objections in a way that is not defeated by error. The coherence theory of knowledge and justification I defend is constructed on this assumption.
