Abstract

Poetry is a significant genre which reflects the making of the social, political and religious phenomena of its own time. The role played by poetry in the classical period is akin to the role the contemporary journalists play in the propagation of their own opinion and the dismissal of counter-opinions through the pages of their newspapers. Hence the reason why the conceptual apparatus of poems produced by certain schools are regarded as primary resources for historical inquiry. The sectarian Shia terminology which developed theoretically during the Islamic Golden Age, shaped in the course of rebellions during the Ummayad and Abbasid periods, and diversified during the Fatimid era are all reflected in the Shia poetry produced in each period. Most poems of this era belong to the Shia poets while some were written by dissident poets. This article shall investigate the poems in question and the sectarian terminology used therein.
