Abstract
Velocity distributions of secondary ions formed by ion-molecule reactions in hydrogen, methane, and mixtures of hydrogen and noble gases were measured using the deflection method. The ion-source was pulsed; therefore, most of the secondary ions were formed in a field-free region, i.e. most of the reacting ions had thermal kinetic energy. The mean kinetic energy of some product ions in the laboratory system was found to be twice or three times larger than the thermal energy of the primary ions. That means that the collection efficiency for secondary and primary ions may be different in a conventional mass spectrometer. The observed kinetic energy of the HeH +, NeH + and CD 5 + ions can be explained if the internal energy of the reactants is assumed to be transformed into translational energy of the products.
