Abstract

The kinetics of the bromination of N,N,2-trimethylaniline have been investigated in aqueous perchloric acid over the range 0·005 to 5M, measurements of redox potential being used to follow the disappearance of bromine. For acid concentrations up to about 2M the reaction velocity is inversely proportional to the Hammett acidity function h0, but at higher acid concentrations the rate varies more rapidly than the acidity function. A better correlation is obtained with the acidity function h0‴ derived from measurements with tertiary aromatic amines.
