Abstract

Abstract The kinetics of oxidation of substituted toluenes with chromyl chloride in carbon disulphide solution has been studied. The value obtained for the Hammett reaction constant, ρ, is −2·20 ± 0·08. This is consitent with the theory that reaction involves a cyclic transition state.
