Abstract

A previously obtained non-linear equation for the relaxation in the density of a single-component polymeric liquid has been investigated in order to describe the glass-transition in polymers. As in the case of the equation for the spinodal decomposition of binary mixtures, a thermodynamically favourable stationary solution is achieved by passing through a sequence of rearrangements of labile but kinetically stable structures, close to the labile stationary solutions. Relaxation occurs as the alternation of rapid rearrangement of this type with long retardations.
