Abstract

Kinetic relationships of bimolecular, free radical reactions in solid polymers are discussed. Kinetic models (polychromatic and diffusion controlled) used for description of processes occurring in the solid phase are analysed in detail. Experimental results from an investigation of the kinetics of simple free radical reactions, namely decay of radical pairs and abstraction of a hydrogen atom by a macroradical, are presented and discussed. A characteristic feature of these reactions is distribution of the reacting species according to their kinetic properties, which results from the complex nature of molecular mobility in a polymeric matrix.
