Abstract
In this work, we have investigated the relevance of the (G) (crack velocity versus mechanical-energy-release rate) approach at the nanometer scale. A special atomic force microscopy (AFM) sample holder has been used to image propagating cracks in soda-lime-silica glass (35x4 mm 2 glass plates have been cut into 1.1 mm thick float glass (composition (wt%): SiO 2 71.9/Na 2 O 13.8/CaO 8.8/MgO 3.7/small amounts of Al 2 O 3 , SO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 )).
