Abstract

Kinetic features of the polymerization of oligo-ester acrylates in thin films in air are analysed on the basis of double bond expenditure and the consumption of oxygen. The relative roles played by reactions of homopolymerization and copolymerization with oxygen have been determined up to the gel point and in the three dimensional polymerization. Before the onset of gelation anomalously high rates of homopolymerization were observed. To explain this it is thought that oligo-ester acrylates may be regarded as being highly associated liquids. Three dimensional polymerization in thin films of OEA in air proceeds mainly as homopolymerization.
