Abstract

The projection-operator technique, previously used to obtain the kinetic equation (generalized master equation) for the probability density in phase space, is applied to the example of the classical gas with central-force interaction. The N-body kinetic equation is obtained, and from this the exact kinetic equation for the one-particle distribution function. With the assumptions of short-range interaction and low density an approximate equation is obtained. For the case of weak interaction precise agreement with the Boltzmann equation occurs. The exact kinetic equation is not restricted by these assumptions, but contains terms describing processes in dense gases involving three, four, or larger groups of particles.
