Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to compare clinical success of two different fissure sealants and effectiveness of two different polishing techniques. Material and methods: The study was conducted among 50 patients aged 9-12 years. First permanent molars with caries-free, fully erupted, with deep and retentive pits and fissures have been treated using two different fissure sealants (Smartseall Detax, Germany and Fissurit FX, Voco, Germany) after polishing with air-polishing (Air polisher Prophy mate, NSK, Tokyo, Japan) or prophylaxis paste (Sultan Prophylaxy paste, Topex, Turkey). A total of 169 sealants, applied to maxillary and mandibular left and right permanent molars, were evaluatedafter 20 months. The scores about sealant retention and caries were recorded. It was recorded whether the sealant completely or partially covered the pits and fissures and the tooth was sound nor not; and these scores were analyzed with Chi-square test. Results: There were no significant differences among the groups (p=0,90). In the Smartseal&loc and Fissurit FX groups, sealants were completely covering occlusal surface at rate of 89,4% and 91,7% respectively. The completely retention of fissure sealants were 91,4% and 89,8% in air-polishing and prophylaxis paste group respectively. Conclusion: Both of the fissure sealants with different prophylaxis tecniques are find to be clinically acceptable.
