Abstract

Sustainability can mean different things to different organizations, depending on their distinct business and stakeholder contexts. Thus, in developing a sustainability program, one must understand the sustainability-related aspirations, goals, and challenges both internal and external to the organization. This chapter describes how an organization’s approach to sustainability can be developed through understanding the interaction between the organization and the environmental and social systems in which it operates. Furthermore, it presents the GEMI Metrics Navigator™ process, a roadmap for identifying key sustainability issues and business metrics that can help an organization achieve its sustainability goals.
