Abstract

Numerous bath were constructed at Kastamonu during the time of both the Principalities (Beylik's Period) and the Ottomans; among those two from the time of Cobanoglu Principality, three of the known four from Candarogullari Principality and six from the known seven of the Ottoman Period bath have survived to present. The Honsalar and Yakup Aga bath are the one that had been destroyed. The Vakif and Saray bath, though rather in poor conditions, have still preserved their wholeness; of the Firenksah bath, only the caldarium have been preserved to present. The conventional plan type of the bath consists of cross-like setup of iwans-or vaulted rooms, where the cornerns function as tepidariums. This set-up bath is to be seen in Firenksah (1262), isfendiyar Bey (15th century), Yakup Aga (1547), Arabapazari (mens section 1506) buildings. A second plan type consists of a central domed space with lateral tepidariums and double halvet or private rooms. Kale (Saray) (1460), Ismail Bey (1460), Arabapazari (womans section), Cifte (1514), Dede (1514) baths are in this group. On the other hand, the Saray bath with even set-up of frigiderium, tepiderium and private sections and Vakif Hamami with hexagonal tepidarium are the sole examples of those plan types at Kastamonu.
