Abstract

SUMMARYThe number, shape, and relative length of chromosomes, as well as the chiasma frequency in Pholidoptera aptera aptera (population from Poland) were compared with those in Ph. aptera karnyi, a newly described karyotype of an endemic Balkan subspecies (population from Bulgaria). The two subspecies were characterized by the same chromosome number (2n = 29♂) and sex determination type (XO ♂ and XX♀). The karyotypes differed only in the length of L1 and X chromosomes and in total mean chiasma frequency.
