Abstract

This study aims : (1) to reveal the verbal and visual codes of the political caricature in the Rakyat Sulsel daily newspaper. (2) to explain the coded iconic message and iconic message without code of political caricature in the Rakyat Sulsel daily newspaper, (3) to explain the function on the caricature in the rakyat sulsel daily newspaper. Method used in this study was reflective qualitative method, since this method the researcher put himself as a subject and also determined the data interpretation. To filter the data, the researcher also used observation method (direct obsevation and interview). Then, the samples used in thid research was purposively depend on caricature meaning and their function. The result indicate that all the cartoons have different verbal codes and visual codes. Depend on the picture and message of the caricatures. Overall, the study indicates that there is no outstanding cartoon with visual and verbal code, both always appear together. On the other hand, no carricature appears without verbal codes. Each illustration always conveys with expression to express the meaning of the caricature. The purpose of the cartoonist turns into reality in the reader’s mind. Sometimes it is regarded as natural although in sometimes has different interpretations. Political caricature in this newspaper, not only covers four functions as forwarded by Gombrich but also there is an addition of other functions which always attach to the new cartoons such as provocative function, expressive function, social function, and interest function.
