From the example of the inquisitor suggested by Kant at the end of Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason, the present article analyses the meaning and scope of God as a hypothetical resource given the moral conscience suggested by Kant in the Doctrine of Virtue. The central thesis of the essay maintains that this hypothetical resource does not have normative character but is instead an instance of moral self-enlightenment.
