Abstract

As a religious educational institutions, boarding schools since the first until now had a strategic role in the community. Pesantren are traditional Islamic educational boarding students live with and study under the guidance of a teacher who is better known by scholars. Pesantren now have fairly rapid growth, including exposure to the development of science and technology, so now it's not only religious knowledge is taught in pesantren curriculum but also in science and technology that are already included in the curriculum of modern education in boarding schools. The purpose of this study was to find out about the development of boarding until now, the activities at the school, and social culture that became a tradition at the school. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that the boarding school has developed very rapidly, and the presence of broader changes in the field of science and technology. Kiai and boarding are two things that can not be separated. The role of the pesantren kiai is very important. Scholars through the development of science and technology can be disseminated in a boarding school curriculum. The presence of electronic media and communication media at the school shows that boarding schools are already open to everything related to modern technology. Keywords: Socio-Cultural, Pesantren
