Abstract

In order to show the importance of porridge as Slavic peoples’ oldest dish, hence one of the cultural concepts in Slavic cultures, the relevant conclusions of ethnographic, histori- cal, ethnolinguistic and etymological research on porridge are given at the beginning of the paper. The aim of the research is to analyze the influence of the importance of porridge in the everyday life of Slavs on the status of the lexeme by which it is named in two modern Slavic languages - Serbian and Russian. After a comparative analysis, it can be concluded that the lexeme porridge does not possess rich polysemy, derivation and phraseology, in either of these two languages, yet its significance is reflected in the semantic specificity (underspecification) and the status of the standard in both languages.
