Abstract

Childhood is a central theme in the 2017 Catalan film Estiu 1993, by Carla Simón, and the games and playing of the young protagonists become a key form of expression in the film: it is through children’s games and the playing involved around popular traditions that we gain access to non-evident or unspoken. Through the analysis of games and playing, I argue that Simón offers an innovative representation of childhood in the cinema of Spain, one that is linked to self-representation and that marks the beginning of a new wave female Catalan directors in the country.
