Abstract

Much has been written about the tens of thousands of volunteers who fought to defend the Second Republic during the Spanish Civil War, but little has been said about those foreigners who chose to help topple the Republican government. Fighting for Franco is not a study of the so-called ‘volunteers’ of the Italian and German armies and air forces. Rather it is a fascinating study of a much neglected and at times deliberately ignored area of historical study—the admittedly small numbers of American, British, French, Russian, and Romanian citizens who went to Spain to overthrow the Republic.
