Abstract
Nineteen years and five broken gyroscopes after its launch, the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) was finally decommissioned on September 30. The shutdown of IUE marked the end of what NASA officials called one of “the longest and most productive missions in the history of space science.” IUE was a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (United Kingdom).Designed to last just 3 years, IUE operated for about 24 hours a day from a geosynchronous orbit for nearly two decades. The observatory and spectrographic instruments enabled studies of phenomena that emit ultraviolet radiation, and the results were prodigious.
