Abstract

Joseph Conrad wrote a remarkably detailed account of the development of spontaneous combustion in a coal cargo at sea. Technical and historical comments have been added to his description and Conrad's knowledge of the parameters concerned with the self heating of coal are examined. The findings of the Singapore Court of Inquiry into the sinking are reviewed and placed in the context of the technical awareness of that time. Some suggestions are also made as to the source of Conrad's acquired knowledge of coal self heating.
