Abstract
COMPLETE eye care can be provided only by the medical profession (ophthalmologists) working with physicians in other branches of medicine and with allied health personnel. Medicine must look ahead, anticipate, and fulfill the health needs of our country. We must recognize the fact that we are living in an era when the demand for health services by our ever increasing population can be met only by medicine's awareness and acceptance of the challenge. To successfully meet this challenge in the field of eye care we need not only more ophthalmologists, but also more ophthalmic medical assistants who work at the direction and supervision of ophthalmologists. It is estimated that there is an immediate need for approximately 6,000 more qualified allied eye health personnel. With an informed public's increased demand for medical eye care it is expected that approximately 20,000 additional ophthalmic assistants will be needed in the near future to
