Abstract

This article is concerned with cultural differences that play a significant role in translation and the problems in translating culture-specific items. An important problem in cultural translation is that the cultural items to be translated do not exist in the culture of the target language and thus do not have a context of reference for the target reader. In the translation of texts from Turkish into French or from French into Turkish the translator faces the problems of translating between two different cultures. In this case what would be the best strategy for translation? How much of the cultural context can be transferred to the target language? How could the translator deal with the culture-specific references? This article analyses the problems in translating culture-specific items from Turkish into French .
