Abstract

At the beginning of the XIXth century, the city of Roubaix has reached the summit of its industrial and textile development. It is then that it decides to celebrate its success. For so doing, it calls on one of its children who had become famous in Paris, the painter Jean-Joseph Weerts. This article introduces one of the major monumental paintings of Jean- Joseph Weerts's, who is to be recognized as a major portrait-maker. It reports the genesis of the project, steeped in the context of the period, traces the different stages of the creative process - documentary research, preparatory studies, actual execution of the work, backing of the canvas - analyses the painting in its final form and ends up with a glance at its reception by the people of the time. It attempts thus at meeting a twin objective : hith- lighting the qualities of an artist who is being rediscovered today, and, beyond that purpose, illustrating one of the functions of art in its relations with IIIrd Republic society.
