Abstract

![Graphic][1] Jay Govind was raised in Durban, South Africa. He graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Cape Town, and completed several years as a resident medical officer. Being of Indian descent, he found that career opportunities in specialist medicine were limited to him in South Africa. He emigrated to Australia to pursue his fortune. After periods in hospital practice and in primary care, Jay trained in occupational medicine, and became a prominent independent medical examiner for an insurance company. In that role, he encountered the results of studies performed at the University of Newcastle into the diagnosis and treatment of neck pain after whiplash. Impressed by that work, he resigned from being an insurance doctor to become a research fellow, in order to participate in the evolution of interventional pain medicine.
