Abstract

The creation, formation and development of mining and mining science in Russia is largely due to the activities of many foreign specialists, in particular, the native of Austria I. F. Herman (1755–1815), who came to Russia in 1782. Scientifi c and practical activities of Herman was multifaceted: according to his project, the country’s fi rst steel factory was built in the Urals; to study geology and mining, he made fi ve trips to the Urals and Siberia; in 1802–1812 he was the head of the mining administration of the Urals; in 1803 he created the fi rst printing house in the Urals in Yekaterinburg; he was a member of the Berg College, holding the rank of Oberberg-Hauptmann class IV; in 1790 he was elected ordinary academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences; he published about 60 works on various issues of mining, geology, mineralogy and statistics; his name was widely known in various European academies and scientifi c societies.
