Abstract
Research corollary to the edition of Boccaccio’s De casibus 1400 translation in middle french by Premierfait has recently outlined the complex reality of fifteenth-century culture. This article sets out to question the concept of literary success in a historiographical and epistemological perspective, by confronting some common critical biases with philological and codicological facts or demonstrations. What is mirrored from such a methodological exercice is that the philological work surrounding an edition is only the beginning of any book’s history… a mere yet indispensable pretext.
