Abstract

Ontario Library Service-North is publishing a series of community development tools for public libraries, beginning with the Crime Prevention and Personal Safety for Your Library and Community tool kit that was e-published on the OLS-North website in 2004. This article introduces library boards and staff to community building principles and practices, and the language of community developers. The role of the library in community and capacity building is discussed, as was introduced at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference 2007 session and as described in the tool kit, It Takes a Library to Raise a Community: A Community Development Activities Tool Kit for Public Libraries. The tool kit is about to be released to libraries.
