Abstract
The veterinary surgeon is deemed to be the professional 'in charge' when animals are being treated and is likely to be held liable for any damage or injuries caused to practice staff, clients and, where appropriate, their staff, whether he has been negligent in matters of safety or not. It may help the Veterinary Defence Society in defending an action if the vet has taken appropriate precautions ‐ adequate restraint of the animal, warning the client of unpredictable behaviour, ensuring he has sufficient help, etc ‐ but, as the following tales from the VDS case book show, this may not be enough to avoid liability.
