Abstract
This chapter focuses on trust relationships, describes how strong ties of trust can lead to better outcomes, explains the high likelihood that large-scale joint research will be initiated by partner companies and suggests a new framework for joint research. In general, the starting point in industry-academia collaboration and/or joint research participation begins under a contract to share limited knowledge and information. This means that a contractual relationship of trust has been built. However, in order for collaborative research to create innovation, a strong relationship of trust is needed. This level of trust is built on the belief that these organizations will not betray one another. Collaborative research conducted where a strong foundation of trust exists can build into a relationship that fulfills the active exchange and sharing of knowledge. In the end, these organizations can become confident that they will produce results beyond their initial expectations leading to better quality, large-scale joint research initiatives. The COVID-19 pandemic has also significantly altered the social environment in terms of how joint research initiatives are developed with private companies. For this reason, universities need to consider on how to carry out joint research programs in the future.
