Abstract

Abstract : Polymerization of two isomeric amino-ketones was achieved by solution polycondensation using a p-toluenesulfonic acid catalyst. The thermal stabilities of these two products were compared both in air and in an inert atmosphere using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Both products exhibited the same resistance to decomposition in an oxidative as well as in an inert atmosphere. In contrast to previous diketone-diamine systems these two products underwent essentially complete volatilization both in air and surprisingly in inert atmosphere. Direct inlet mass spectroscopy detected the presence of cyclic trimers in both products, which may explain the high volalitity. Reasons for the greater thermal stability of one isomer compared to the other is postulated. (Author)
