Abstract

The Mössbauer effect observed after recoil implantation of Coulomb excited nuclei has been used to measure the change in nuclear charge radius in the 2 + → 0 + rotational transition of 160Gd and 158Gd. The results ( Δ〈 r 2〉/〈 r 2〉) 158 = 0.6 ± 0.3) × 10 −4 and ( Δ〈 r 2〉/〈 r 2〉) 160 = (0.1 ± 0.3) × 10 −4 agree with theoretical predictions and indicate the presence of centrifugal stretching.
