Abstract

The genus Gentiana (Gentianaceae) is represented by 12 species in Turkish Flora with important biological effects such as antipyretic, stomachic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, hepatoprotective and antidiabetic activities. Iridoids, secoiridoids, C-glycosylflavones and xanthones are considered to be the most promising groups of compounds responsible for the pharmacological activities of the Gentiana species. In this study swertiamarin, sweroside and gentiopicroside were isolated from Gentiana olivieri and their cytotoxic activities were evaluated against HEP-2 (human larynx epidermoid carcinoma) cell lines based on MTT assay for growth inhibition.
