Abstract

A marine bacterium designated MIL-1, which was originally isolated from the green algae Codium fragile produced a sulfated polysaccharide when grown in a seawater medium containing sucrose. Isolation of this polysaccharide was accomplished by precipitation with ethanol and Cetavlon, followed by DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. This polysaccharide prepar-ation which was homogeneous in both ultracentrifugal and electrophoretic analyses was composed of galactose, rhamnose, and sulfate at a molar ratio of 1:1:1, together with O-acetyl groups.
