Abstract

1. 1. Sialoglycolipids were isolated from the lipid extract of gonads of sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius by partition dialysis and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. The major sialoglycolipid was isolated in the pure state by thin-layer chromatography. 2. 2. The carbohydrate components of the major sialoglycolipid were studied by gas-liquid, thin-layer and paper Chromatographic analysis of different hydrolysis products. The main sialoglycolipid consists of 2 moles of glucose and 2 moles of sialic acids, the latter being a mixture of N-acetyl- and N-glycolylneuraminic acids (65 % and 35 %, respectively). The structure of the oligosaccharide moiety was studied by methylation analysis and periodate oxidation. 3. 3. The fatty acids of the major sialoglycolipid were analysed by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography. Normal fatty acids and α-hydroxy fatty acids were found. 4. 4. The sphingosine bases in the major sialoglycolipid are c 16, and C 18 phytosphingosine and C 20:1 and C 22:1 dehydrophytosphingosine.
