Abstract

The isoelectric point (IEP) is measured at 25.0°C on a binary solid solution calcined at 1200°C containing two oxides of Al 2O 3, Cr 2O 3 and Fe 2O 3 as a function of the composition of the system, and compared with the values calculated on the assumption of the additivity rule in binary systems. In the Cr 2O 3Fe 2O 3 system, the agreement is good. The IEP of the Al 2O 3Cr 2O 3 system approximates to that of pure Al 2O 3 over a wide range of the composition (0–90% Cr 2O 3), which is explained by the dissolving out of Cr 2O 3 from the surface. The Fe 2O 3Al 2O 3 system exhibits the same IEP as that of pure Al 2O 3 over a concentration range of 0–80% Fe 2O 3. In this system, the selective exposing of Al 2O 3 is suggested.
