Abstract

The properties and the production mechanism of very energetic secondary pions observed in cosmic-ray jets have been investigated by comparing them with those expected in the isobar process and the Landau process. The production frequency of energetic secondary π0 mesons in the experiment agrees with that expected in the isobar process. The energies carried by those energetic pions and their angular distribution could be explained by either of above processes. The charge ratios of such pions in the experiment are rather favourable to the isobar process.
