Abstract

Islanding detection is challenging for both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) microgrids (MGs). Several research on islanding detection for AC MGs is successfully developed and implemented. Recently, DC MGs have attained significant attention due to its better efficiency, reduced losses, economical and straightforward structure. This paper focuses on islanding detection for DC MGs, which is in the initial stage. A system impedance monitoring based islanding detection scheme (IDS) is proposed to detect islanding quickly. Here, distributed generations (DGs) terminal voltage and line current samples are collected to calculate the system impedance. When the system impedance exceeds a predefined threshold value, relay trips and the circuit breaker is open-circuited to detect islanding. The proposed IDS is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink platform, and finally, the experimental validation is carried out on a DC MG hardware test bench using dSPACE DS1104 controller.
