Abstract

There is no doubt that the transformation of Jakarta's IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah (Syarif Hidayatullah State Institute of Islamic Studies) into a full-fledged Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN or State Islamic University) in 2002 was a major milestone in Islamic higher education reform in Indonesia. Since then, dozens of other IAINs (Institut Agama Islam Negeri, State Islamic Institutes) across the country have followed suit, and there are now almost thirty UINs. This chapter deals briefly with the development of Islamic studies in Indonesia from a historical perspective. It discusses the distinctive features of Indonesian Islamic studies and highlights the place of Islam in the Indonesian tertiary academic world, particularly of IAINs, STAINs (Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri, State Islamic Colleges) and UINs. It also discusses the role and contribution of these higher educational institutions to strengthening Indonesian wasatiyyah Islam (moderate Islam), which is crucial in keeping radicalism at bay in the country.
