Abstract

ABSTRACT By using formal analysis and investigating the history related to the emigration of East End Jews in London, I discuss antisemitism in From Hell. From Hell provides various visual and verbal coordinates to suggest that the birth of the 20th century will bring antisemitic values and rhetoric which will, in turn, contribute to the Holocaust. In that way, Sir William Gull (or Jack the Ripper) is not just midwifing the twentieth century to bring upon a continuation of the patriarchy, but he also assists in the creation of the Shoah.
