Abstract
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is mediated by autoantibodies to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR). Although AChR-specific T cells are necessary for disease development, the role of cytokines is not clear. Here, Balaji Balasa and Nora Sarvetnick discuss the T helper 1 (Th1)/Th2 paradigm and emerging evidence that interferon γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin 12 (IL-12) are important in experimental autoimmune MG pathogenesis.
