Choice can be a wonderful thing, particularly if you are eating in a splendid restaurant or buying a new dress, but we need to discuss the merits and the difficulties regarding choice in the provision of health services. Some people have suggested that the choice agenda smacks of pandering to a group of highly articulate people who are quite capable of using the system well and looking after themselves (and yes, I am one of them). Those who are more on the side of improved public health and reduced health inequalities fear that these critical issues may conveniently get forgotten when it is full speed ahead towards more choice for relatively healthy people, who occasionally require fixing.
