Abstract The results of this experimental study to elucidate the effects of microstructure and irradiation conditions on irradiation-induced densification of UO2 pellet fuel show that sintered UO2 pellets with specific ranges of microstructural characteristics are stable with respect to densification. The largest in-reactor density changes occurred for those fuel types having a combination of the smallest pore size, the largest percent of porosity
